Dinner on the Deck

We had a stretch of nice days in Seattle, and spent quite a few dinners out on the deck. I guess I should have taken the picture so that you could see the yard as well, but I wanted to fit in Sara, Theo, and the table.

A Surprise at Camp

This isn't an exciting surprise. It's one of those lame, new-parent sort of surprises that explains why we're so much happier, more tired, and stupider than most people.

The Second Windsurfing Trip

Finally, a post on our windsurfing trips. We've been down to the gorge twice now this July, but only brought the camera for the second trip. Theo is as happy a cute clam in his tent: he'll hang out for an hour, looking around and listening to the wind.

Traveling is a little more complicted with Theo, but not any more complicated than any other part of our life has become. He's still cute, even surrounded by the clutter of the van.

We've developed something of a routine, and are able to pump on the road. This makes driving a lot easier, as we can feed him while we move, as well as sharing the work and sleep-deprivation of nighttime feedings.

Theo does well with the camping. He just likes to hang out. We have a nice setup with our tomato. I think it is worth the monthly payments and maintenance.

We like hanging out with him too. Finally, we see Theo in the midst of Hood River night life. We went to check out the movie in the park after eating the gelato you see below. Too much night life for us, I guess. We felt too tired to stay up for the movie and just drove back to camp instead.

Theo's New Tricks

I still have a bunch of pictures to upload. But tonight Theo's learned two new tricks that I had to record. He is now a fist-sucking maniac. His fist has been occasionally finding its way into his mouth over the week or so, but today he really figured it out and seems able to stick it in there almost at will. He almost entertains himself doing that---soon he won't need us at all any more.

More surprising has been the clicking. Sara thought it was me fiddling with the swinging chair (one of the latches had gotten stuck), but it was Theo doing a tongue-click. We weren't sure what had happened, when he did it again. We encouraged a couple more out of him. The loudest ones seem to be spontaneous, though, and they are always surprising. Sara & I have been giggling all night about it. Even when Theo grabbed on to Sara's nipple when approaching for a feeding hasn't been as funny---although that set us off for a few minutes too, until Theo clicked again & we were beside ourselves once more with awe & joy.

Road Trip

Last weekend we went down to the Gorge for the second time since Theo was born. On our first trip, over the 4th of July, we didn't bring our camera with us, and what's the use of blogging if I don't have any pictures to show?

We drove over I-90 then down through Yakima and Goldendale. This route is barely justifiable this time of year, as the sailing tends to be west or central Gorge, but the drive is so spectacular that it's worth the extra 45 minutes or so. Highlights are Snoqualmie Pass, seeing Guye Peak devoid of snow; the high desert corralled between the Manastash and Umtanum ridges between Ellensburg and Selah; the Yakima valley, green cultivation rising to cut to brown sharply at the elevation of the ditch; climbing out of the Yakima Valley and then dropping into the empty Indian Reservation; and most of all the green Klickitat contrasting with the surrounding amber hills, with Mount Adams in the distance before dropping suddenly through basalt cliffs to Maryhill.

Theo does great in the Tomato. He was mostly asleep, or quietly contemplating the changing world outside. We think he gets bored if he spends too much time in the same place. He sleeps well in the van as well, hanging out in his car seat up front while we sleep above.

Theo Smiling

Theo has been starting to smile.

It comes and goes.

We always smile in return.

Sara Attacks

Sara charging another windsurfer. I'm not quite sure what the other windsurfer did, I just know I don't want to get on Sara's bad side.

Rocking Chair Zen

I should mention that the rocking chair is courtesy of Alex & Sylvia, via Ben & Jenny.

Our Theo

Yes, he really is the cutest thing ever.

Punk Rock

Two Grandmothers

Myrna spent the last week with us, helping Sara out when I went back to work, and generally being invaluable and helpful. Here she is trying to coax a smile out of Theo, with my Mom looking on.
